The following is a selection of recognized trainings for suicide prevention and intervention. Many of these programs are offered by providers in the St. Louis metro areas. See local providers on the Resources page.

Missouri Ask. Listen. Refer. is a free, online training designed to help Missouri residents prevent suicide by teaching participants to identify people at risk for suicide, recognize the risk and protective factors and warning signs of suicide, and how to respond to and get help for someone in need. The training takes approximately 20 minutes to complete and includes a pre- and post-test and a certificate upon completion.

Assessing and Managing Suicide Risk (AMSR) training helps health and behavioral health professionals feel confident providing compassionate care to people at risk for suicide. The AMSR research-informed risk formulation model offers key strategies to navigate challenging conversations and systemic barriers.

Counseling on Access to Lethal Means (CALM)

Counseling on Access to Lethal Means (CALM) is a powerful addition to existing strategies to reduce the risk of suicide death in at-risk people while respecting their rights and autonomy. Help keep at-risk clients safe by learning how to collaborate with them to implement safe storage of firearms and dangerous medications.

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST)

LivingWorks Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) will teach you how to recognize when someone may be thinking about suicide, and how to provide a skilled intervention and develop a safety plan with the person to connect them to further support.

Conversations for Suicide Safer Homes (CSSH)

Conversations for Suicide Safer Homes informs participants of the role they can play in preventing suicide by reducing access to lethal means, particularly firearms. Participants will learn to identity warning signs and risk factors for suicide and how to put time and distance between the person at risk and lethal means.

Mental Health First Aid

Mental Health First Aid is a skills-based training course that teaches participants how to identify, understand, and respond to signs and symptoms of a mental health or substance use challenge in adults ages 18 and over.

Question Persuade Refer (QPR)

Question, Persuade, Refer - the three simple steps anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide. People trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help.

S.A.V.E. Training

VA S.A.V.E. Training is a free, brief online or in-person course that will help you act with care and compassion if you come across a Veteran who is in crisis or having thoughts of suicide.

Talk Saves Lives

Talk Saves Lives is AFSP’s flagship suicide prevention education program that covers the scope of this leading cause of death, what the research has found to be the warning signs and risk factors of suicide, and the strategies that prevent it.

Youth-Related

Signs of Suicide (SOS)

Signs of Suicide (SOS) is an evidence-based youth suicide prevention program designed for grades 6-12 that teaches students how to identify signs of depression and suicide in themselves and their peers.

SOS Trusted Adult Training

Signs of Suicide (SOS) Trusted Adult Training teaches adults how to recognize warning signs and risk factors for suicide, engaging in appropriate, caring conversations, and keep a student safe, while connecting them to qualified school staff.

Youth Mental Health First Aid

Youth Mental Health First Aid is a skills-based training that teaches parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and any other citizen how to identify, understand, and respond to an adolescent (ages 12-18) who may be experiencing a mental health or substance use challenge.
